Seattle Pipe Club Mississippi River is a blend that's hard to put your finger on. There's a ton of complexity in this crumble cake created by the club's master blender, Joe Lankford. Specially selected matured red Virginias and carefully stoved black Virginia form the base, to which some exotic Orientals are added. Then comes a hearty amount of Acadian Perique and a touch of Cyprian Latakia. The soft cake crumbles apart easily and packs and lights readily.

The flavor is markedly sweet and tangy with a good amount of mellow spice, and the hint of Latakia adds body, giving it a lush mouth feel and complexity. When we heard that they were going to age some Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding in a Bourbon barrel, we just had to check it out. We got a chance to see the tobacco not long after it had been put in the barrel, We were told that the barrel had only been emptied of its boozy cargo two weeks prior, so the aroma of Bourbon was intense. After a month-long nap, the tobacco was pressed into the familiar crumble cake format, and in a nod to other well-known infused blends, a chunk of one of the staves from the barrel is included. Although the scent of Bourbon is very noticeable, it melds well with the tobacco so that you get a burst of the flavor at first light and then it moves into the background, but is always present. St. Bruno was originally conceived in the 1890s by Thomas Ogden, a businessman who had started a tobacco shop in 1860 along Park Lane in Liverpool, England. Within a few years, Ogden opened several other shops throughout Liverpool, and after seeing how successful his retail operation was, Ogden decided to venture into manufacturing, establishing his first factory in 1866. By 1890, Ogden owned six small factories and a snuff mill. Since its beginnings, St. Bruno has become a staple pipe tobacco, with Mac Baren taking over production in 2006 and purchasing the blend completely in 2015.

As a pipe tobacco, St. Bruno features smooth Virginias and smoky Dark-Fired Kentucky, all steam pressed and sliced into thin flakes — with this version, then, rubbed out before being packaged. It's topped with subtle floral and citrus notes for a delightful character that complements the natural tobacco without drifting fully into Aromatic territory.

The name is De Luxe for a reason. Stanwell is very selective when it come to this series of pipes. The brown polished De Luxe briars are chosen for having outstanding grain, which is complemented by a warm, golden-brown color.

The Stanwell Hans Christian Andersen series might well be their most iconic line. All of them exhibit the graceful styling for which Stanwell is renowned, but with a unique twist. All of them come with a standard length and a churchwarden stem so you can enjoy your pipe when you're a bit more active, or when you have the time to lounge and relax. 

The Stanwell Hans Christian Andersen Brushed Black is not only the most affordable finish in the lineup, but it's incredibly attractive.
